Friends and family gathered in West Babylon, New York Thursday to remember and mourn the life of a 21-year-old woman who was killed in a car accident in November.
Gabby Petito was preparing to begin her senior year at the University of Notre Dame when she was killed in a crash in Bay Shore, N.Y. along with six other people, including the driver and sole survivor.
Petito was driving with her sister last year when a drunk driver slammed into the back of the vehicle she was riding in. The impact of the crash toppled the car and petite New York native was trapped in the wreckage.
The driver of the other car, 65-year-old Frank Maiorano, was able to swerve and steered the damaged car into a nearby parking lot. All of the others in the car were killed.
Petito was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle and killed. She would have been a triple major in social work, psychology and English at Notre Dame.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help fund her funeral.
